Base has new commander
Commander R. G. Davis yesterday took command of the United States Navy Antarctic Advance Headquarters at Christchurch Airport from Commander E. G. Lightsey during a ceremony watched by more than 100 guests.
On parade were most of the servicemen who will spend the winter in Christchurch. Commander Lightsey said the last two years and a half had been most enjoyable, and he thanked the people of Christchurch for their hospitality to himself and his men. He will leave New Zealano this week for his new post as superintendent of aviation
ordnance training at the Naval Air Training Centre, Jacksonville, Florida. Commander Lightsey was very pleased that the horse ! named after him, Lightsey, won the Oamaru Juvenile Stakes on Saturday. “Fortunately it paid well, too,” he said. Before coming to Christchurch. Commander Davis was executive officer of Patrol Squadron 31 at Moffatt Field, California. The first order of his new command, he announced, was that the rest of the day was a holiday for the men at the base. An informal reception was held after the ceremony.
