DIPLOMATS STONED
(N.Z. Presg Assn.—Copyright) VIENTIANE, May 11 Laotian soldiers and policemen today stoned and injured four North Vietnamese diplomats who had walked out on a public speech by the Prime Minister (Prince Souvanna Phouma). The diplomats, including the North Vietnamese Charge d’Affaires (Mr Nguyen Giap) had apparently objected to a passage in Prince Souvanna's Constitution Day speech, denouncing North Vietnam for sending troops into Laos, a neutral kingdom. When the North Vietnamese left the V.I.P. reviewing stand on the main
boulevard In Vientiane and got into their car, Lao Army vehicles blocked the exit from the ear park. Uniformed soldiers and policemen then hurled stones at the vehicle, breaking all its windows. One Laotian soldier leaned over and used a rifle butt against the driver’s head. Others of the North Vietnamese, including Mr Giap, were cut by flying glass. The incident was brief and the car sped away to the North Vietnamese Embassy. None of the diplomats reported to hospital for treatment.
