Arlington Motor Inn

Sir,—The City Council has again shown an utter disregard for the residents of Christchurch by issuing a building permit that will spoil for ail time the beautiful Park Terrace area. Can Cr Taylor be sincere in his statement that the council could not have withheld a permit until an acceptable proposal was submitted? I would also be interested to know whether any city councillors are financially interested in this project.— Yours, etc., RATEPAYER. April 23, 1971. [The Town Clerk (Mr M. B. Hayes) replies: "The permit for the Arlington Motor Inn is not yet issued, but, subject to compliance with the council’s by-laws and code of ordinances, the City Engineer is legally bound to issue a building permit. The proposed motor inn is within the council's ‘special amenities area* and the owner and designer have co-operated with the council in the design of the elevational treatment of the building. I am not aware of any city councillor’s being financially interested in this project. .However, if there should be. the position would be covered by the Local Authorities (Mem-

bers’ Interests) Act, 1968, which prohibits any member having a pecuniary interest from voting or taking any part in a discussion on any matter coming before the council, or one of its committees, in which he has such an interest."]
