Horses tried but none bought
"The Press" Special Service AUCKLAND. M. Provan, a leading New York trainer, tried a total of 53 horses in trials at Pukekohe and Alexandra Park on Wednesday and Thursday with the aim of making purchases on behalf of American , interests. He bought none. Mr H. G. Harris, of the Pacific Bloodstock (New Zealand) Company, Ltd, said that no sales had been negotiated because either the prices quoted were “unrealistic” or the horses did not come up to the required standard.
Among the horses tried were the 1970 New Zealand Trotting Cup winner, James, the top-
ranking northern three-year-old, Mathias, and Gay H4l. Mr Harris's company is handling all arrangements concerning Provan's purchases in New Zealand. It was planned to secure 24 horses for a flight chartered by Provan. The aircraft will leave Auckland tomorrow for the United States. So far only 12 horses have been bought-—lO in Christchurch and two in the Auckland area. The local horses going are Light Forbes and Kiwi Express. Both are acceptors for the Calliope Free-for-all at the Auckland Trotting Club’s meeting at Alexandra Park on Tuesday night. The horses bought by Provan in Christchurch include Chequer Board, Royal Count and Kllladar.
