ABORTION LAWS
(N.Z. Press Association) HAMILTON, April 21. A move to have the Government publicise existing legislation on abortion so that women would know their rights was lost at the recent annual meeting of the Waikato Womens’ Division of the National Party in Hamilton. Speaking for the Gisborne electorate, Mrs A. D. N. Manuel said there was a general misunderstanding on the present laws of abortion .in New Zealand, and few women knew their rights or those of the unborn child. Many predicted abortion would be legalised if a referendum was held in New Zealand because of this misunderstanding. New Zealand had the opportunity to look critically at other countries where abortion laws were liberalised before making any changes. Besides studying mistakes, they could also see the measures undertaken to prevent unwanted pregnancies, she said. Mr J. F. Luxton, M.P. for Piako, said a publicity campaign on existing legislation could be harmful. He recommended the meeting ask the Government what the present position was.
