OCEAN RACE

Progress slow <N.Z. Press Association) WHANGAREI. Chico, Kishmul, Havoc, Castanet, Rogue, Skinflint, Young Nick, Biitzkreig and Raider are the leaders on corrected times in the Whangarei to Noumea yacht race after five days of sailing. There is little difference between the handicap leaders and the actual leaders, the sequence of which is: Chico, Kishmul, Rogue, Poseidon, Skinflint, Indolent, Biitzkreig, Young Nick, Totolo, Anna Louise, Phoenician, Coruba, Raider, and Havoc. The time the race is taking favours the light-weather lower-rated yachts, and explains the predominance of yachts of around 30ft—Chico, Havoc, Castanet and Biitzkreig—or the One Ton Cup boats of 36 to 37ft—Kishmul, Rogue, Sinflight, Young Nick, and Raider.

On corrected times the first A division yacht is Poseidon, a Stewart 34. Havoc made a good run but others like Buccaneer seem to have fought in vain. Way back in the fleet, the late-starter Photina has gone sideways rather than ahead.

With another 230 miles to go, and no sign of a decent wind, it appears unlikely that any yacht will finish before early on Sunday morning.
