China has withdrawn (NZ.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) LONDON. China has withdrawn from the international lawn tennis federation, the federation secretary (Mr B. Reay) said yesterday.
The All-China Sports Federation wrote to the federation withdrawing and severing all relations with it on the grounds that “under the manipulation of United States imperialism, the I.L.T.F. has openly accepted the so-called tennis association of Chiang Kai-Shek as full members of the 1.L.T.F., therefore creating two Chinas.”
The annual meeting of the I.L.T.F. in July will discuss the letter.
Mr Reay said that Peking knew about the proposal to affiliate the Taiwan association a year ago but did not make any protest at the meeting when the decision was taken.
“Unless China changes its mind, it will mean that Chinese players will not be eligible to play at Wimbledon, Forest Hills, Paris and the other official championships of the LL.T.F. “This is particularly regrettable at a time when friendly sporting relations are being established with China in other fields,” said Mr Reay.
