ELECTRICITY THE PLACES: Marsden Power Station, 24 miles southeast of Whangarei, adjacent to Bream Bay. Two 120,000 kilowatt boiler-turbine-generator units, each rated-at close to a million pounds of steam per hour at 1500 p.s.i. and 1000 deg. F. Meremere Power Station, about 40 miles south of Auckland. Six 300,0001b5/hour boilers and 730,000 kilowatt turbine-generators operating at 600 p.s.i, and 850 deg. F. The Jobs: Initial appointment would prqbably be as Assistant Operator, under training in the operation of steam power plant, but people with higher than usual qualifications could possibly start at a higher level. The People: We are seeking people suitable for training in this work, and a determination to advance is essential. Marine engineering experience, particularly with tickets, would be of particular interests, as would experience in the operation of large power plants overseas. A desirable standard would be eligibility under Marine Department requirements to sit for the FirstClass Engine Driver’s certificiate, which requirements are broadly: (i) Similar engineering trade experience to that specified for sitting for the Third Class Marine (Steam) Engineer's Certificate. or (ii) Two years firing and attending boilers of ovei ’ 200 n.p. rating while holding a Second Class Engine Driver’s Certificate. Anyone with experience in boiler operation but not quite meeting the above requirements could inquire as experience in attending and firing large boilers under supervision can be given. The Pay: Basic salary for an Assistant Operator is $3317 p.a. Shift Allowances, penal rates, etc., for the shift roster (normally a total of 168 hours worked per four weeks) bring gross earnings to over $4600. Good houses are available for just over $4 per week including power. Usual Public Service annual leave and superannuation conditions apply. Financial assistance given with household removal costs. The Prospects: Steam power generation is expanding rapidly, with New Plymouth little over two years away and larger stations beyond that Promotion is on merit (i.e. no rigid seniority system) and prospects for advancement are very good for those with an aptitude for operating who are prepared to study for the necessary certificates for which every assistance and encouragement will be given.
