NAVY LEAGUE MEETING

Sumner-Redcliffs sub-branch

The primaiy duty of the Sumner-Redcliffs sub-branch of the Navy League was to raise funds to supply additional' equipment for the Training ship Cornwell, both at Redcliffs and Ripapa Island (Lyttelton Harbour) said the sub-branch’s president (Mr E. N. Obom) at the annual meeting on board T. S. Cornwell. “This unit is different form most youth organisations in that the boys are supplied with new uniforms and training is given in all aspects of seamanship,"’ Mr Obom said.

“The committee is rewarded by seeing these lads turning into fine upstanding young men who have been taught to accept discipline, one of the finest attributes, so seldom seen in today’s youth,” he said. Boys between 13 and 18 were welcome to the Sea Cadets at T. S. Cornwell, which already had 56 ratings, plus seven officers and instructors.

The sub-branch was represented by Mrs J. Nunnick as a delegate on the steering committee for the new frigate Canterbury and by Mr R. Nunnick on the Estuary development committee. The Resident Naval Officer lat Christchurch (LieutenantCommander K. I. Knight) attended the meeting, and with members viewed a film on Antarctica. | Officers elected were: President, Mr Obom; active vice-president, Mr R. Alexander; secretary, Mrs J. Nunnick; treasurer, Mr C. Aiderson; committee, Mesdames N. Starr and I. Horgan, Messrs W. Gray, T. Norton, C. Smith. C. Chester, R. Rathgen, and ! G. Dark.
