Defence tour by Minister

6V.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, April 23. The Minister of Defence (Mr Thomson) will leave Auckland on Tuesday to inspect New Zealand forces in South-East Asia. Mr Thomson will also assess New Zealand’s contribution to defence of the area in the light of the new five-Power arrangements.

He will visit Singapore, South Vietnam, Thailand and Malaysia, and will hold talks with Government leaders and senior officials. Mr Thomson will be joined by the Chief of the Defence Staff, LieutenantGeneral Sir Leonard Thornton, on April 30. During his absence Mr Thomson’s portfolios of Defence and Police will be administered by the Minister of Maori and Island Affairs (Mr

Maclntyre), those of War pensions and Rehabilitation by the Minister of Health (Mr McKay), and the Minister of justice (Mr Riddiford) will -act as Associate Minister of Labour and Immigration. Mr Thomson will return to Wellington on May 8.

Cook Lecture.—The Captain James Cook Fellowship Lecture on Maori and Polynesian origins will be given by the 1969 Fellow, Dr R. C. Green in Wellington on Wednesday. The fellowship was established by the Government in 1968.—(P.A.)
