Greece
Sir,—"Concerned” has every reason to be; he appears to need glasses. The Red Cross report on Greek prisons found, as did three subsequent investigations by British M.P.s, no evidence whatever to support Leftwing rumours of ill-treat-ment of prisoners. The
prisons themselves appear to nave been less objectionable than our own Mount Eden, and, as reported by the press, some weeks ago, are now free of political offenders. Freedom of the press and radio was restored in 1969, and freedom of speech or student eligibility for university have never been, and in Greece could never be, a political issue. Surely the eternity of “two months” in Athens would have taught “Concerned” that to remove the favourite Greek pastime of discussing politics is like trying to stop the Kiwi discussing Rugby. And by no stretch of the most shortsighted imagination can Greek roads be called “well kept.”—Yours, etc., ALITHIA. April 21, 1971.
