Sierra Leone ceremony

The Prime Minister of Sierra Leone (Dr Siaka Stevens) was sworn in yesterday as executive President of the newly-proclaimed republic. The ceremony, after Parliamentary approval of the Constitution Amendment Bill, was attended by members of Freetown’s diplomatic community.
Dr Stevens formally declared the former British colony, which became an independent member of the Commonwealth in 1961, a republic two days ago, after a 52 to 10 vote by Parliament He said yesterday that Shierra Leone would remain a member of the Commonwealth, and would pursue a policy of non-alignment.
