FORECAST TO MIDNIGHT Situation.—A disturbed westerly airstream covers the southern Tasman Sea and New Zealand. Forecast: Canterbury.—Winds between north and west, fresh at times; showery in the Alps and a few showers elsewhere at first, otherwise partly cloudy; more rain in the Alps later in the day; moderate temperatures. Buller and Westland.—Moderate northerlies ; a few scattered showers but more general rain later in the day; moderate temperatures. Marlborough.—North-west to west winds, fresh to strong in exposed areas, but probably moderating for a time; showery, possibly with scattered thunderstorms at first this morning but clearing again during the day to scattered showers with variable cloud ; tending cooler. Nelson. —Westerly winds, probably tending south-west, fresh at times; generally showery at first, with thunder; clearing during the day except for scattered showers, but more rain by late tonight; moderate temperatures.
Outlook: showers on the West Coast and in the Alps; long fair periods in the east.
