Slow drivers

Sir,—The slow driver driving less than 30 miles an hour and hugging the centre line must be the cause of some of the deaths on the road. I suggest they be brought to face traffic charges in the courts. They are as guilty, and as dangerous, as other types of road hogs. The road toll could be cut by half by running another line two or three feet from the centre white line and making it an offence to cross it unless for passing purposes. The ine could be of an orange colour. I suggest a trial in some streets of Christchurch and on Canterbury’s main roads. —Yours, etc., UNITA FORTIA. April 12, 1971.

[Mr J. F. Thomas, regional director for the Ministry of Transport, replies: “Provision is made in the existing legislation requiring a motorist to drive in a manner and at a speed so as not to impede the normal and reasonable movement of other traffic, and action is taken by officers when motorists are observed disregarding this requirement. Your correspondent is thanked for his suggestion regarding the additional line, and while at first glance there appear to be reasons against the proposal, the matter will be fully investigated.”]
