Regional finalist for “Pastoral Queen” title
Miss Cushla Bennett, of Swannanoa, has been selected to represent the central region in the national finals of the New Zealand “Pastoral Queen” contest in Dunedin at Queen’s Birthday week-end. A land girl on her parents’ farm at Swannanoa, she was chosen from six finalists by the judges, Miss Jean Herbison, Mrs M. C. Hunter, and Mr A. F. Wright. Personality, grace, a pleasing appearance and speaking ability, good general knowledge and understanding of New Zealand farming, were the attributes sought by the judges. Miss Bennett was the winner Of the “Pastoral Queen” contest held at the Northern Agricultural and Pastoral Association show in Rangiora. The other finalists were Miss Margaret Jones (Mayfield), Miss Anne Poff (Cheviot), Miss Shirley Johnson (Ashburton), Miss Suzanne Stott (Courtenay), and Miss Jacqueline Hayman (Waimate). Miss Bennett’s prize is a trip to Dunedin for four days for the final judging, $2O (spending money, and a woolilen ball gown for her final appearance. The New Zealand “Pastoral Queen” will win a trip involving two weeks in Britain and a month in Canada.
