Law sought to fight pollution
(N Z Press Association) AUCKLAND, April 22. AH the 50 or 60 streams round Mount Egmont had been polluted by farm and household waste, the Municipal Association’s conference was told today. The Mayor of Hawera (Mr F. W. Finer) said that in some cases, tile drains had been laid to carry cowshed waste to streams.
Mr Finer was speaking in support of a remit asking the Government to give local authorities greater powers of control over pollution in rivers, streams, and watercourses.
“Every stream of the beautiful waters of Taranaki is polluted,” he said. “This is a disgraceful situation.”
Proposing the remit, the Mayor of Lower Hutt (Mr J. Kennedy-Good) said his council was becoming concerned about the pollution of inland streams in Lower Hiitt “We have looked at the chance of prosecuting offenders, but under the present laws, we can’t do it unless we can prove guilty intent,” he said.
The remit was adopted unanimously by the conference.
