BLACKPOOL LEAVES
Going back to Royal Navy (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, April 22. Trailing a 386 ft paying-off pennant, the frigate Black pool left from Devonport yesterday on her return to Britain. She is ending a five-year association with the Royal New Zealand Navy. Aboard was a Gisborne engineer, Mr J. Pheloung, who is being taken to Britain as a guest in the ship in return for his services as a welfare organiser for the crew. When the Blackpool reached New Zealand it was “adopted” by Gisborne. Mt Pheloung was the organise! for fund-raising, one of the purchases being a utility cat which was given to the crew. The captain of the Blackpool (Commander R. E. Lawrie) has handed to the commodore at Auckland (Commodore J. P. S. Valiant), a charter granting the freedom of Gisborne to the ship, which will be reassigned to another ship. He also handed over the initial deeds for a $5OOO bursary given by the ship’s present and former company for educational purposes in Gisborne. Since commissioning into the Royal New Zealand Navy in June, 1966, the Blackpool has steamed 365,000 miles and has been at sea 26,'300 hours.
