Store calves in strong demand

Under strong competition from a largegallery of buyers, store calf values continued to strengthen at the Addington market yesterday.

At the peak of the sale, medium and good average steer calves edged up another $2 and in some cases more.

With buying inquiry from Mid and South Canterbury, as well as local districts, the market was every bit as strong as last Thursday’s buoyant sale. However, although the market was a strong one, it was by no means steady. A good selection of big calves frequently reached or exceeded $80; this seemed to reflect on to some of the medium calves, for there were some sales which were regarded as phenomenal.

At 2440, the yarding was the largest of the season, and was confined to calves from districts south of the Hurunui River. It included a good selection of big calves from Banks Peninsula, and these met an animated sale. There was also a large entry of tussock calves, most of them He refords; for size, these again sold at a premium. Heifer calves continued to sell well, particularly the pens showing even size and quality. Smaller pens of more mixed qual tty were easier toward the end of the day. The market opened with some pens in the first race easier on Tuesday's rates, but with the offering of some of the feature lines of big calves, the market was in ail respects as buoyant as last Thursday’s very strong sale.
