Works’ clerks seek rise
Representatives of 1200 clerical workers in freezing works throughout New Zealand will meet in Christchurch today to decide what action to take to gain an extra 14c an hour which they claim is needed to bring them into line with other workers in the freezing industry. Mr E. C. Blacker, national secretary for the Freezing Companies Clerical Officers’ Union, said the meeting would consider the employers’ “last and final offer” of 7c an hour, together with the employers’ alternative proposal that they should meet in concilation for a new award. Asked if the union executive would consider direct action at their meeting next Friday, Mr Blackler said theexecutive was “very conscious (hat our members on the job are feeling very strongly about the situation.”
