POLLUTION BY CARS
Companies face large suit (N.Z.P. A.-Reuter—Copyright) NEW YORK, April 21. A heart-research organisation has filed a $675,000,000m suit against the four large United States car manufacturers, charging that they deliberately re-' fused to begin programmes to reduce air pollution. The action was brought in ' the Manhattan Federal Court' by the Heart Disease Re- ■ search Foundation against General Motors, Chrysler, 1 Ford and American Motors, i It alleged that the defendants chose, "in order to in-1 crease their profits,” to re-; fuse deliberately to “embark i upon significant pollution re- ] duction programmes.” They would, it said, be unable to meet present Government; standards within the next five ( years. It sought both a temporary and permanent injunction to bar the defendants from further production of cars with! internal-combustion engines. Unless the request was! granted, “pollution levels in the United States will significantly increase, further increasing the incidence of heart and lung disease,” the isuit contended. . —— —s- 1
