FRENCH ORDER QUERIED
(N.Z.P.A. Staff Correspondent) LONDON, April 21. A genuine order, or a “frame-up”? This is the question being asked in dairy trade circles about France’s recent request for 9000 tons of butter from New Zealand. New Zealand had to refuse the order because of commitments elsewhere, and there are now some who are saying that France will turn this against the British in their request for special arrangements for New Zealand in the entry negotiations in Brussels.
These commentators argue that France did not really want the butter, but did want to be able to say to the British in the future, “New Zealand professes to have difficulty In selling her dairy products, and yet when we make an order she is unable to fill IL** There Is little doubt that Britain wanted New Zealand to fill the order, but that she understood the difficulties in view of the present world shortage. New Zealand’s argument was that old and stable customers could not be short-changed for a possible “one-time” order from a normally self-suf-ficient area.
