Top harrier to rest
One of Canterbury’s most prominent harriers, M. Clarkson (Methodist), has decided to take a well-earned rest from competition this winter.
“I have not done any training,” he said yesterday. "I have got things to do and I need a rest, although I might turn out towards the end of the season just to help the elub. It will not be serious, though.” Clarkson, who is also an outstanding track athlete, has been racing and training for 10 years without a break. He won the Canterbury 800 and 1500 metres titles in 1970 but had difficulty reaching top form last season and lost them both to A. Gilmour (Technical). In cross-country, he has represented Canterbury without a break since 1964. Last season, he returned fastest time in the University Relays and won the Jane Patterson race.
He plans to make a comeback to serious competition i for his summer club, New 1 Brighton, next track season. ' The distances he selects will
depend on his early training but there is a possibility that he will concentrate on the 1500 and 5000 metres.
