Society receives wheelchair
A specially designed wheelchair, the first of its kind in New Zealand, was presented to the Multiple Sclerosis Society yesterday.
Together with nine “Easy Grip” walking sticks, the wheelchair was donated to the society by Mrs L. R. Penfold. The walking sticks are designed to fit the needs of a person affected by multiple sclerosis.
Designed and made by Mr W. Bettie, of McKellow and Hume, the wheelchair has been made on a trial-and-error basis, modifications and additions being made throughout its construction.
The patient can be lifted out of bed and into the chair with ease because the chair has a removable back. The wheelchair has been designed to have all the comfort of a lounge chair, but yet it has retained all the mobility of a wheelchair.
The photograph shows officers of the Multiple Sclerosis Society inspecting the chair after its presentation. They are (from left): Messrs R. H. Gaskell and C. W. Delbert, members of the board, and Mrs A. Georgieff, the society’s social worker.
