RACING Princess Mellay tops weights for Adams Hep

Two New Zealand Gup winners (Princess Mellay and Noir Filou), an Auckland Gup winner (Artifice), and the New Zealand St. Leger winner (Silver Knight) form the group given top rating by the Canterbury Jockey Club’s handicapper, Mr H. V. Spicer, for the George Adams Handicap, run at Riccarton on Easter Monday.

Princess Mellay has 8.13, and is rated 31b above Artifice for one of the richest 14m races of the autumn. When they met in the Wellington Cup in January, Princess Mellay ran second under 8-11 and Artifice finished eleventh with 8-12 after being forced over more ground than most of her rivals. Noir Filou, the third topweight with 8-6, won the Wellington Racing Club’s Chalmers Handicap (2m) with 8-2 earlier this month, and if his

Riccarton campaign is continued he might be the one best able to improve the northerners’ record in the race.

Noir Filou won the New Zealand Cup with 7-12 as a five-year-old in 1968, Silver Knight has 8-2 or 21b less than weight-fbr-age. He showed his mastery of a mile and a half in winning the inter-island race at Riccarton' in February, and established his class amongst his contemporaries with a record-break-ing victory in the New Zealand St Leger earlier this’ month. The only other entrant with: more than 8-0 is Watallan/ which on his campaign at Ric-: carton in November won thei Metropolitan with a record: gallop of 2:28 for a mile and a half. In the Metropolitan he carried 7-11 and beat Artifice < (8-0) by half a length. His return to winning form, against the sprinters at Wingatui last Saturday, must have raised the hopes of his connections for a second valuable middle distance victory for the season at Riccarton. Notorious, Susan Jane and Ajasco show the strength of the female sprinters this sea- 1 son in occupying the first three places in the weights for the $4OOO Great Easter. Notorious has 8-10 and has one pound more than Susan Jane.
