Reaction by C.A.R.P.

(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, March 28. Price freezing for two or three months by some grocery chains have been called “a recognition of widespread consumer pressure” by the Wellington branch of the Campaign Against Rising Prices. The president of the branch (Mrs, C. Kelly) said they would regard the move more seriously if it were not so short a term and partial. “The question that must always arise with such temporary moves is what happens afterwards? “If these supermarket firms are sincere and this is not just an advertising gimmick tbased on non-essential goods, !as the national president of the Retail Grocers’ Association claims it is, they should place a freeze on prices of all their goods at the level which applied at the end of the price freeze, not at the higher prices now existing.” ■ Mrs Kelly said the supermarket firms should exercise ■ pressure on manufacturers land processors who are putting up their prices to maintain and increase already high profits.
