Two major exhibitions
Two of the major Canterbury art exhibitions of the year are to open in the next week. |
On Saturday, without fuss or fanfare, Rudolf Gopas will open his retrospective exhibition in the C.S.A. gallery—a major show spanning the last 10 years of his career. Next week; on April 7, the Robert McDougall Art Gallery will open its second exhibition this year of Canterbury artists. This time it is “Recent Painting in Canterbury,” contributed by 14 of the province’s leading artists. Among these the betterknown names are W. A. Sutton, Olivia Spencer-Bower, Doric Lusk, Don Peebles, Philip Trusttum, G. T. Moffitt, Quentin MacFarlane, Colette Rands and Louise Lewis.
The exhibition will show the diversity of work being produced in Canterbury, ranging from intimate watercolours to large “colour field” paintings, and including a wide range of subject matter—neo-realist paintings of people and their environment, minimal and hard-edge abstractions, portraiture and landscape.
A gallery spokesman said I the 31 works should serve ! the duel purpose of dispelling I the myth of a regional school lof painting in Canterbury and illustrating the lively and professional approach maintained by the artists involved.
The show will continue until May 2. For his exhibition, Mr :Gopas will dispense with the | usual private opening; the .works will simply be put on i show. The exhibition has ■been the subject of considerable discussion in art circles in recent weeks, and is I widely described as the most important show scheduled in the C.S.A. gallery this year. The publicity-shy Mr Gopas is not only one of New Zealand’s leading artists. He is also a leading teacher of artists; and on this page are appreciations of his work I contributed by two other • Canterbury painters who i have also made their mark in I teaching. Ted Francis is a (senior lecturer in painting at (the School of Fine Arts, I Ham, and Quentin Mac Far: lane is a lecturer at the : Christchurch Teachers’ Trainring College.
