Denial over strawberries
(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, March 28. The man who last season sold $150,000 worth of fresh New Zealand strawberries to Australians, has denied that New Zealand is robbing Queensland strawberry growers of their home markets. Australian growers have complained. In Auckland on business, Mr T. G. Pilavachi, whose company is the bigges.t Australian distributor of New Zealand berry fruits, said that New Zealand fruit merely filled in a supply gap and was in demand because of its quality. The Queensland growing season lasted from June until the first week of October. In New Zealand strawerries were grown from midOctober to April. The only time that New Zealand strawberries clashed with Australian berries was during October, November and December, when New South Wales growers marketed their produce, Mr Pilalvachi said.
