Wharf ban on carrier
The Christchurch Road Carriers* Association will meet the Lyttelton Waterside Workers* Union at 11 a.m. today in an attempt to resolve a dispute which resulted yesterday in the watersiders imposing a ban on handling cargo to or from Durhams Transport, Ltd, of Christchurch. Neither the manager of Durhams Transport (Mr N. Durham) nor the secretary of the waterside union (Mr ME. Foster) made any comment about the dispute apart from confirming that the ban was in effect. Last November a similar dispute arose between the watersiders and Durhams Transport. Then, the watersiders maintained the company was handling Lyttelton cargo that was the prerogative of watersiders. The company denied this. The ban was lifted after a meeting between the waterside union and the carriers’ association, some days later.
