FIRE OUT OF CONTROL
(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter —Copyright; ATLANTIC CITY (New Jersey), Mar. 29. A major fire broke out in the north-east part of Atlantic City today and spread out of control, engulfing homes and docks. Sixty-five engines and other fire-fighting equipment rushed to the area and authorities requested assistance from surrounding communities. United States Coast Guard fire boats joined in the efforts to contain the blaze. About 5000 people live in the area hit by the fire.
Atlantic City has a population of about 50,000. The fire was reported spreading from house to house as wind-whipped flames leaped from roof tops. AU of Rhode Island Avenue, a street about half a mile long, was burning. Several trawlers were burning and efforts were being made to tow them away from the piers. One boat was reported sinking. The blaze Is believed to have started along the piers on Rhode Island Avenue.
