Excellent times from “Junior Olympics”

Seventeen new records were established during a hectic but absorbing first day of the Wharenui "Junior Olympics" at the Wharenui club's pool on Saturday morning, afternoon and evening. Good entries were received for the carnival and over 90 events were run during the day. about half of these with three or four heats. The organisation was of a very high standard and was a credit to all officials involved. Miss J. Parkhouse,, swimming in her club pool was the best performer of the day, breaking three records, all in freestyle events. She broke the 100 hundred metres time twice. The first time in her heat when she won in lmin 7.9 sec and again in the final with a time of lmin 6.6 sec. The previous time was lmin 9sec. held by Miss S. Hallam. Her best performance however, was in the 200 metres event in which she won the final in 2min 16.1 sec, clipped an incredible 15.8 sec off the previous record held by Mias T. Shipston, and set in 1966. Another Wharenui swimmer to

do well was Miss M. Berry, who after breaking several Canterbury records in the under 10 grade this season, broke the under 10, 66 2/3 metres freestyle record by 2.ssec in recording 51.5 sec.

Besides Miss Parkhouse, Miss J. Murdoch (Wharenui) was the only swimmer to set more than one record on Saturday. She set her first new time in the under 11, 66 2/3 freestyle with a time of 48.5 sec and her second in the 33 1/3 butterfly when she chopped a second off the old time, winning in 25sec.

Other record breakers in individual events were Miss M. McManus (Elmwood) in the under 13, 66 2/3m freestyle; C. Smart (Wharenui) in the boys’ under 11, 66 2/3m freestyle; Miss D. Head (Wharenui) in the girls’ 33 l/3m freestyle; J. Dimick (Hckitika) in the under 10 boys’ 33 l/3m butterfly; Miss S. Andersen (Greymouth) in the under 13 girls’ 100 m freetyle; Miss L. Clarke (North Beach) in the under 13 girls’ 66 2/3m butterfly; B. Lewis (Spreydon) in the under 15 200 m freestyle; and R. McCabe (Sockbum Park in the under 15 four lengths individual medley. In addition there were three relay records broken; two by Sockbum Park teams and the other by a Wharenui team. Freestyle and butterfly events were held this week and breaststroke and backstroke events will be held next Saturday.
