Mount Eden again
(N.Z. Press Association) MELBOURNE. The Western Australian pacer, Mount Eden, ran a flying mile In Imin 59 4-ssee at the Melbourne Show Ground on Saturday night and became the first pacer to break two minutes for a mile in Victoria. Mount Eden earned $6900 for the feat. His connections were offered a fee of $lOOO to attempt to better the two-minute mile with Mount Eden and a further $5OOO if he succeeded. They were offered an extra $lOOO if he could break his Australian record of Imin 56 7-10 sec set at Harold Park on March 19.
Saturday’s time was the fourth successive time Mount Eden had officially bettered two minutes for the mile. The first time was at Addington when he ran InUn 56 l-ssec in a time trial oh February 27. He then ran Imin 58 4-ssec in Ills sensational Miracle Mile win at Harold Park after losing a lot of ground at the start. This was followed by Imin 56 7-10seo at Harold Park on March 19, which stands as the Australian record.
Before this sequence he was privately timed to better the time during all his races at the Inter-Dominion Championships and in a training run before the championships making eight successive miles under two minutes.
