First win for a year

Almost a year to the day since his previous win Same Again upset calculations at Addington Raceway on Saturday when he won the Canterbury Park Handicap. As in his previous win, Barrhill was runnerup. Raced in partnership by his Yaldhurst trainer, H. Stafford, and Mr P. S. Georgeson, of Dunedin, Sam Again was perfectly positioned throughout Saturday’s race after being the early leader.

He improved on the inner and waited on Barrhill and Globe Bay until the straight entrance. He then quickly took control but had to be shaken up to keep Barrhill out by a length. Rain Again returned an amazing performance to finish half a length away third. He galloped away and ran very wide early, losing about 72 yards. He came with a determined run along the inner for his placing, a

head in front of Pun, which made up ground. Globe Bay tired to fifth. The favourite, Royal Trump, met trouble on the home turn and finished sixth. Hundred Chance made a game bid to lead for the last nine furlongs and a half in the second leg, the Christchurch Stakes, but he was no match in the run home for the Mosgiel-owned and trained Sharlea. The Young Charles mare was given a splendid run by M. Holmes and she finished at a great rate to win by a length and a half. Hundred Chance lasted to hold second by a nose from Empire Royal, with Pine Globe a fair fourth, well clear of the surprise second favourite, Black Label. FOURTH WIN

Mister Smart gained his fourth successive win and gave C. B. McPherson, his Gore part-owner, his first success at Addington, when he led throughout the Farewell Stakes. He had to be driven out to hold off a determined challenge from Light Eve by a neck. These two had the finish to themselves, All Local being two lengths

back, four lengths in front of Refluent. \

M. Holmes had a second win when Philemon held off Le Char by a short length in the Harewood Handicap. Mighty Forbes did well to finish a neck away fourth after being outside two horses and in the open for almost the whole of the race. Great Applause made a renewed bid for fourth.

Dancing Step added to the fine record on the night of horses owned in Otago and Southland when she outfinished Boy Louw, Late Command, Aranga, Eden Pal, and Water Skier in a spirited end to the Airways Handicap.

This race was the second leg of the on-course double, the first going to Garrison House. Dancing Step is trained and driven by F. E. Newfield, who drove Garrison House to shade Whipochet by a short length, with Kimbell Duke, Morpheus, Shalimar and Tippytin close up.

Brockworth King, at false odds of 6 to 1, gained a deserved win in the First March Stakes, Colonel Adios. holding on for second, clear of Master Key and Rangitira, which dead-heated.
