More colour in new make-up

Despite fashion’s return to the forties, make-up will not revert to the look of that period—lush red lips and thin plucked brows-—in the opinion of Mrs Jan Hudson, international beauty consultant for Cyclax of London. “Eyes, with plenty of colour, are still the focal point,” she said in Christchurch yesterday. Mrs Hudson, who is based in Hong Kong, is visiting Christchurch to demonstrate a new range of eye make-up. “There is much more colour in the new range—shades such as lilac and a very pale blue that we have never had before. Also there are varieties of lashes, including lower lashes.”

Make-up trends were influenced by fashion “quite a lot,” said Mrs Hudson.

Darker colours

“For instance, with the new darker colours being used for fashion clothes, colour must be focused elsewhere. And also, with the midi and longer skirt lengths, it leaves the face —more especially the eyes—as the focal point. This

is where the greater use of colour comes in.” Overseas trends indicate use of maroon and yellow around the eye, but Mrs Hudson feels they would be unflattering for most people. The shaven eyebrow look too, is not for everybody. “We are achieving a softer look for eyebrows though, with our brush-on brow make-up. It gaves a much softer and more natural look than a pencil, which leaves a hard line.”

Mrs Hudson’s “hobbyhorse” is skin care. “I hope I have the same success in New Zealand that I’ve had overseas. Mothers bring their daughters as young as 11 and 12 for me to teach them the basics of make-up and skin care. “So many young girls spoil their natural beauty by overemphasising their eyes and nearly always they have forgotten to cleanse and tone their skins.” Strict training Her own two daughters, aged 14 and 12, have had very strict training from their mother with regard to skin care. Mrs Hudson’s own introduction to the cosmetics business came vja a modelling career in England. ‘‘l reached the stage where I had to decide to go on with modelling or go into the beauty business. I chose the latter because it still provided the opportunity for compering fashion shows.” Mrs Hudson will be in Christchurch for a week, and will then travel to Wellington, Dunedin, and Auckland.
