COAST SHEEP AFFECTED
Outbreak of facial eczema (From Our Own Reporter) GREYMOUTH, March 28. Hundreds of sheep in the Grey Valley are at present affected by what is believed to be the first outbreak of facial eczema diagnosed on the West Coast. “More and more farmers are noticing the symptoms,” a veterinarian with Westland Veterinary Services in Greymouth, Mr D. Alexander, said.
Appearing also for the first time is an extensive outbreak of secondary pneumonia. “Periods of stress, particularly around lambing time, are the time for a lot of deaths attributable to facial eczema,” Mr Alexander said.
Close watches are being kept on grass temperatures, and the weather forecast indicates that the rain experienced over the last two days is clearing. Temperatures of 76 degrees and humidity of 100 per cent are the optimum for fungus growth, but it persists under more adverse conditions.
