LONDON.

Arsenal snatched a draw from the edge of defeat with a last-minute penalty goal in its English Cup semi-final match against Stoke City on Saturday. Liverpool also came from behind in the other semifinal, defeating Everton, 2-1, after Everton had taken the lead in the ninth minute. Arsenal, narrowly eliminated from the European Fairs Cup by Cologne on Tuesday, seemed to have lost its English Cup place when unfancied Stoke stemmed an early assault by the Londoners and then took command. STOKE 2-0 AHEAD The centre-half, D. Smith, put Stoke ahead after a twenty-second minute corner, and nine minutes later

J. Ritchie seized on a defensive blunder by C. George and scored Stoke’s second. Arsenal was a badly shaken side, but a goal by P. Storey early in the second half revived the Londoners. They besieged the Stoke goal in the final 10 minutes, and when a defender, J. Mahoney handled in- the nintieth minute, Storey scored the equaliser from the penalty spot. The two teams will replay on Wednesday. Two second-half goals, by A. Evans and B. Hall, gave Liverpool victory over Everton in a magnificent , match. A goal in the ninth minute by A. Ball, put Everton on the victory path, but it suffered a severe blow when its centre-half, B. Labone, went off in a collision with J. Toshack after 50 minutes. UNSAFE AFTERWARDS

Labone had been the key figure in a superb Everton defence which never looked the same after his departure. Nearly 120,000 spectators watched the two semi-finals —62,144 at the battle be-

tween Liverpool and Everton at Manchester and 55,000 at the Arsenal-Stoke game at Sheffield. Meanwhile, Arsenal’s chances of the double were revived when the first division leader, Leeds United, met its first defeat for seven weeks, going down, 1-3 to Chelsea. Leeds still leads, with 54 points from 35 matches, Arsenal is second, 48 from 32, and Chelsea follows with 44 from 35. Results: ENGLISH CUP Semi-finals.—Everton 1, Liverpool 2; Stoke 2, Arsenal 2.
