Yachts hit by storm
Eighteen heelers of the Banks Peninsula Cruising Club raced over a harbour course on Sab urday. Half-way through the event, the fleet was struck by a line squall with winds of 50-60 knots, forcing many of the yachts to withdraw. The crews handled the adverse conditions with considerable skill, and although a number of yachts had sails blown out, there was no serious damage. The second division yachts were well on their way to the westerly mark when the gale struck and four were able to complete the course. Allegro (D. Hart) sailed very creditably to win the race by five minutes from Fantasy Three (T. Holton). In the first division, Melita (S. Corrick) and Talnul (A. Mackenzie) were the only competitors to finish. Restless (A. Norfolk) completed the course, but on one occasion he started his engine and lost valuable points which have made his position as leader in the first division championship less severe. With 318 points, he is now closely followed by Melita. 315, and Apia (R. Johnston) 314.
