Film on young deaf adults begun
Work has begun in Christchurch on the script of a film dealing with young deaf adults. Produced for the New Zealand Teaching Films to Help Deaf Children Society, the film will deal with employment and adjustment to living. The New Zealand Film Unit will begin production within the next few months. Christchurch Round Table Society No. 4 has guaranteed to raise $4OOO to sponsor the filmAt the annual meeting of the society, the president (Mr M. B. Parsons) said that his recent overseas study tour had served to underline his previous conviction that there was a great need for a film dealing with the employment, potential and skills of deaf adults. “We are living in a world which is only just beginning to realise that the deaf person has a right to develop his potential in all areas of endeavour.
“A film of deaf people in employment, showing the range of their achievements has never been adequately made. If the deaf in the future are to take their place
effectively in society, they must be given the opportunity to develop their potential,” Mr Parsons said. The use of the film as an educational aid was important, he said. Officers elected were: President, Mr M. B. Parsons; secretary, Mrs M. R. Herrick; treasurer, Mr A. H. McCormack; committee, Mrs F. Chilton, Messrs F. Chilton, J. P. Fahey, G. Guy, H. Pickering and S. Robertson.
