NAIROBI, March 28.
The Kenya Government has released the former Leader of the Opposition, Mr Oginga Odinga, after 18 months detention.
Mr Odinga, who is 59 and a former Vice-President, was detained, and his Kenya People’s Union party was banned, in October, 1969, after rioting in Mr Odinga’s home town of Klsumu, on the shores of Lake Victoria, during a visit there by President Jomo Kenyatta.
Usually well-informed sources say that Mr Odinga has returned to his home at Kisumu.
Most of the former K.P.U. officials detained at the same time as Mr Odinga have since been released, although Mr Odinga’s close aide, Mr Achieng Oneko, a former K.P.U. publicity secretary and Minister of Information in Kenya’s first independence government, remains in detention.
Radio Kenya announcing Mr Odinga's release, said that President Kenyatta had reiterated that he did not wish to have people detained longer than the security of tiie State demanded.
