Rail-cars
Sir, — I wish to make a protest about the roughness of the rail-car journey when a companion and I travelled to Blenheim on Monday, March 45. I have never experienced such a ride befpre, being jolted from side to side. The faster the rail-car travelled, the bigger the jolts and the noise as if all the Furies were after us, and I could Hot help but wonder if the wheels would keep to the rails or would we go flying into space. I am not alone in my complaint by any means. In these dayd of progress, trp not the public travelling between Christchurch and Blenheim worthy of something better? We will certainly not be making the return journey by the' same means.—Yours, ANXIOUS VISITOR. March 19, 1971. : [The District Traffic Manager of Railways (Mr A. D. Campbell) replies: “The department regrets that passengers were subjected to the uncomfortable ride described by the correspondent. Preliminary investigations indicate that *he rail-car used on this occasion had developed a defective drive shaft coupling. While this did not impair the safety of operations the conditions would have given rise to excessive noise and vibration. The defect was remedied when the rail-car returned to Christchurch.”]
