Childhood memories
A Ten O'clock Scholar and Other Stories. By Alison Uttley. With Illustrations by C. F. Tunnicliffe. Faber and Faber. 142 pp.
Mrs Uttley’s childhood memories, her concern for scientific factual knowledge combined with imaginative thought while young, comprise the many vivid recollective essays in this collection. Mrs Uttley recalls dawdling through the enchanted wood where she could never feel alone because she was accompanied by the visions and fears that are so typical of children’s imaginations: the favourite books, animals and •hiding places of her youth and their intrinsic associations; conversations and questions with Walter de la Mare; lying on her back in the green Derbyshire ' fields; nursery rhymes and Aesop’s Fables; country crafts and trades; and a momentary vision of a heaven which was full of all the crippled children of the world. All of Mrs Uttley’s memories, which are interspersed with snatches of verse and line drawings,, maintain a relevance pertinent to both children and adults alike.
