Restrictions at hospital
(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Mar. 26. Nursing shortages were still causing work restrictions, the Wellington Hospital Board superintendent-in-chief, Mr C. K. Tucker, said at a board meeting on Thursday night. Wellington Hospital was cancelling non-urgent theatre cases in the interests of maintaining a safe service, he said. The shortage was also hitting the renal and coronary care units and general wards. The shortage was not being felt only at Wellington Hospital. It concerned the whole area, he said. “Silverstream Hospital has been affected for a long time, the Hutt is feeling it pretty badly and Wellington for the last few months has been very worried.” The board’s matron-in-chief (Miss B. J. Hough) would be presenting a report on the situation within the next month, Mr Tucker said. But it appeared that the number of nurse recruitments was down on last year.
