Lyttelton still
congested Lyttelton is still suf* fering from a serious labour shortage on the waterfront and six ships were idle when Work began at 7 a.m. yesterday. The Calm, Tawanui, Cretic, Holmdale and Hinakura were idle and the. Federal Mackenzie, newly arrived from Nauru with bulk phosphate for discharge, was anchored in the stream awaiting a berth. In addition, the Southland Star, Mirrabooka, Risdon and Patonga were all shortmanned. Some 587 men, including 13 non-unionists, were engaged to work but an additional 430 men (26 gangs) would have been required to man fully all vessels requiring labour. More ships are expected this week-end and the port is likely to be busy again next week.
Because of the congestion, one overseas vessel, the Turakina, has been diverted from calling at Lyttelton. This is the sixth overseas vessel to be diverted from Lyttelton during the last fortnight.
