Appeal goes strongly
Although fewer collection boxes were in use yesterday than in previous years, takings from the annual street appeal held by the Aged Peoples Welfare Council looked certain to be a record, the appeal organiser (Mrs M. E. Lawrie) said last evening. By 7 p.m. $4lOO had been banked and there were still a number of boxes from suburban areas which would not be collected until today, she said. Part of the 7 p.m. total was a record $450 taken at the council’s street stall.
“I thank everybody for their support; the result has been absolutely splendid,” said Mrs Lawrie.
