Support for sea tailing
(N.Z. Press Association) NELSON, March 26. The Nelson Fishermen’s Association decided at a meeting this morning to support other associations to try to keep the practice of tailing crayfish at sea in existence. Representatives of the associaton had explained to Mr S. A. Whitehead, member of Parliament for Nelson, the serious problems which would arise if tailing at sea in the Fiordland area were abolished.
The president of the association (Mr P. Ballantyne) said it was quite confident that Mr Whitehead, who is a member of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Fishing, understood the position. Fourteen Nelson boats fished in the Fiordland area. The value of their catch for the last season would be about $300,000, Mr Ballantyne said.
