Brothers are title favourites
(By oar speedway reporter)
The first official New Zealand super-modified rod championship will be held at the Templeton Speedway tonight, and a Christchurch driver seems certain to become the first title-holder. Heading the list of favourites are the spectacular Annan brothers, Peter and Joe, who took first and second places, respectively, in the South Island championship series which ended last week-end. P. Annan will be driving his Mustang-powered machine and J. Annan will have his familiar Studebakerpowered car. Earlier thi»
season, he was involved in a spectacular crash. Although his car was wrecked, he was uninjured, and in recent weeks he has been driving with all his 'old skill.
The chief threat from outside Christchurch will come from the Auckland driver, D. Jolly. He has entered his massive 327 cu. in Chevrolet but he is not expected to beat
the best drivers at Templeton, where the class was introduced to New Zealand. The Annan brothers, however, will not have things all . their own way. J. Erickson indicated his title ambitions when he won the final round of the South Island championship last Saturday. Two former South Island winners, H. Pierson and D. Cameron, should also be hard to beat. The final round of the South Island three-quarter midget car championship will also be held tonight, but the outcome of the series cannot now be altered. A. Palmer leads with 34 points. His nearest rivals are R. Burt (19) and M. Williams (12). The photograph shows J. Annan in his car.
