Native trees die

Native trees have died in the drought on Erewhon sta-' tion in the headwaters of the Rangitata River this season. Mr A. A. Urquhart said yesterday that in his 28 seasons on the station he had not seen this before, nor had he heard his father talk of such a thing. Mr Urquhart said that a variety of natives, including birches, had been affected as well as exotic trees. There were not a great many, but everywhere there were a few —and some of them were quite large trees. Creeks and ponds had also dried up and there had been a high fire risk. But last night Mr Urquhart was in a happier frame of mind. In the last day or two he said that there had been close to 2in of rain. “It has altered the colour of things already,” he said.
