GOVT LIFE OFFICE
Plan to extend
building
The Government Life Insurance Office has disclosed long-range plans for the development of property bounded by Cathedral Square, Gloucester Street and Colombo Street.
It has acquired enough land to allow it to add to its existing premises—it owns the Carlton Theatre and the adjoining building in the Square and all that land in Gloucester Street from the rear of the Carlton Theatre to the comer of Colombo and Gloucester Streets. Before any redevelopment takes place, it may enter into negotiations with the A.M.P. Society, which owns the rest of the block, known as the Dominion buildings. The regional district manager of the office (Mr W. A. S. Clark) said yesterday that when the existing 13-storey building was being designed sketch plans were drawn for extensions to provide a rectangular building on the north-west side of the Square. So far no other firm plans had been drawn and dates for development were still speculative.
