Shop workers’ pay rise

A basic wage increase of about 5 per cent over current rates was negotiated for retail shop assistants during Concilation Council proceedings in Christchurch this week.

As from April 9, the basic rate for senior men will be $48.55 a week, compared with the present $46.22; for senior women the rate will rise from $31.42 to $33. Service allowances have been modified and increased, so that all workers who have served five years with their present employers will be entitled to $2 a week more. In terms of the original award, negotiated 18 months ago, the increases are substantial as much as 374 per cent in one instance if the service allowance is taken into consideration. However, shop assistants received a 20 per cent interim increase last year plus the 3 per cent general wage order. The award covers all New Zealand except the Northern Industrial District.
