FORECAST TO MIDNIGHT Situation.—A depression is moving off the South Island, but a cold front is advancing rapidly across the Tasman Sea. Forecast: Canterbury.—Variable winds at first, but south-westerlies freshening during this afternoon ; cloudy and mild with a few patches of light rain at first, but a period of more widespread showers likely later today and becoming cooler. Marlborough and Nelson.—-Moderate north or north-west winds; mainly fine at first, but showers likely for a time later in the daj r ; moderate temperatures. Buller and Westland.—Moderate west or south-west winds; further showery periods; cooler. Outlook.—Cool south-westerly conditions with showers mainly over and west of the main ranges.
