Beef-contest winner
Steers from the Mount Peel station filled three of the first six placings when entries in the Canterbury beef and beef-cuts competition were judged on the hoof at the Belfast works of Thomas Borthwick and Sons yesterday. The station, which is run by the chairman of the Meat Board (Sir John Aclandj.and his sons, had three Angus steers in the competition, and
; they took first, second and I fourth placings. i Entries by D. and R. D. ' Gould (Waipara) took third ■ place, R. D. Gould (Amber- ’ ley) fifth, and P. C. Grigg 1 (Mayfield) sixth. 1 The competition drew 65 entries from 25 breeders. , Most of the steers were ■ straight Angus. i According to the judge i (Mr P. D. S. Shea) those in I the top half of the entry
were of very good quality, but because of the austere conditions of the beef-cut-ting points formula quite a number of cattle were obviously carrying too much condition. The beef-cuts section of the contest will be judged by Messrs N. E. Bell and S. Parker at the same works next Tuesday. The photograph shows the winning steer.
